SE question 1

How important is the role played by the self-reliance in the provision of healthcare services to the general public in Singapore? Explain your answers.

Suggested answer:

The role played by self-reliance in the provision of healthcare services in Singapore is important but there are other roles- a healthy lifestyle and community support.
In recent years, self-reliance has become more important as healthcare services have changed over the years in Singapore so as to meet the changing demands of the population. The government cannot afford to give generous health subsidies or taxes would increase. Individuals thus pay part for medical expenses through Medisave and Medishield schemes. These are the compulsory and voluntary schemes to help pay for the medical and hospitalization expenses which develop personal responsibility. The government will not be burdened with a huge expenditure as in the welfare state system of Britain.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is one way of fighting the rising costs of healthcare. If one has a good health, one will spend less in treatment. So, regular physical exercises and a well-balanced diet are emphasized. Bad habits e.g. smoking and drinking are discouraged. Adults are encouraged to go for health screening programmes for early detection of diseases e.g. diabetes, heart diseases. Since further medical costs will rise, it is thus necessary for every citizen to stay fit and healthy.
Community support is another way of providing healthcare services, especially for the aged and poor. Voluntary welfare organizations are given grants to run community hospitals, nursing homes and day rehabitation centres. The aged can also take responsibility of their own health. Through a ‘helping hands’ approach- involving community hospitals, nursing homes and day care centres. It is not feasible for the government to run all the healthcare services.
Self-reliance is the most important role because it leads to a healthy lifestyle, when people take responsibility for their health, they will then realize the importance of having a healthy lifestyle.
A healthy lifestyle is also more important than community support as it is essential to have healthy, robust, and productive people in the workforce. How much can people depend in community support for their healthcare?
